Sample Call Script

My name is [insert name here]. I’m calling because I’m concerned about the growing number of aging oil wells in Alberta.

I was shocked to learn that Canadian Natural Resources, for example, has more than 10 000 inactive wells that are over 15 years old — even though, just last week, they announced 2018 third quarter earnings of over $1.8 billion. And with teams of operators flicking used wells on for just 3 hours a year to make them seem active, who knows how many more wells CNRL and other oil companies have sitting idle on the land.

The longer these wells sit on the land, the more chance they have of leaking toxins into soil and water and releasing harmful air pollutants and greenhouse gases. This is unacceptable.

The AER has told the public of Alberta that oil and gas liabilities are $58 billion, while privately estimating they total $260 billion. The enormous difference in these public and private numbers demonstrates a serious lack of transparency in the data around clean up costs. Information on how many liabilities each oil company has, as well as full, detailed LLR calculations for each company, is simply not available to the public. This is unacceptable given the huge costs that Albertans are not currently protected from being left behind with.

I strongly urge you to release more information publicly about cleanup estimates, so that we can have a real picture of well liabilities in the province. Albertans deserve to know the financial and environmental cost of aging oil infrastructure.

Thank you for your time.
