Statement from The Leap
We have some bittersweet news to share: after five years of rabble-rousing, bridge-building and powerful collaboration to build a better climate movement, The Leap will be closing its doors this summer.
A few factors contributed to this difficult decision: first, the challenges of creating a long-term base of funding for the organization while working across borders, and without charitable status in Canada.
Second, an upcoming leadership transition, with co-founder Avi Lewis and Executive Director Katie McKenna both stepping away from the work after nine years on The Leap and the project that gave birth to it, This Changes Everything. Finally, the toll of the pandemic on our work, fundraising and planning made it too difficult to navigate a major transition over the coming year.
Instead, we’re going to be using our financial runway to finish our projects in a good way, support our wonderful staff to begin the next phase of their careers (some incredible talent is coming on the job market!), and celebrate the work of the past five years.
When we launched The Leap Manifesto in 2015, the idea that the climate crisis demanded a bold and justice-based transformation of our economy and society was greeted, in establishment media at least, as a dangerous, off-the-wall proposition. Now millions see that it is simple common sense. We are proud of the role The Leap played in expanding the boundaries of the possible, along with so many of our movement partners and supporters.
We want to thank each of you for being part of this incredible journey with us.
This community has fueled us every day, and your activism, advice and direct support for this work have humbled and inspired us. We are so grateful to you.
Over the next few months, we’ll be helping to release The Leap’s energy back into the movement ecosystem that started this work. We’ll be launching the projects we’ve been developing over the past year and helping them continue with our partners. We’ll celebrate the highlights, lowlights and lessons learned of the past five years. And above all, we’ll be thanking each of you for being with us every step of the way.
So stay tuned. We may be closing our doors in the next few months, but there’s some great things still to come.
